AAABSE Partners with Libraries of Love

AAABSE Partners with Libraries of Love

The purpose of Libraries of Love is to partner with Africans to create libraries in individual schools.  Through reading, students will develop a love of literature, as well as strengthen their knowledge in each curriculum subject area.  Lifelong readers become lifelong learners.  Therefore, the libraries will serve as bridges to a better future for the children of Uganda.

Benefiting Libraries of Love

Austin Area Alliance of Black School Educators (AAABSE) is teaming up with the Austin-based organization, Libraries of Love, to help build school libraries in Uganda. We are hosting a book drive to collect books that will be shipped to Uganda in the spring and placed in a library this summer.

Book Drive FAQs

When is the book drive? February 1 – February 28, 2014

What type of books? New or gently used hardback books for elementary and middle school. Easy and nonfiction books are especially needed. Paperback books will not be included in a library collection but will instead be given to a Ugandan student.

Where do I drop off the books? Please select a designated location on your campus. AAABSE will make arrangements to pick up donations from every participating campus.

What does Libraries of Love do? Libraries of Love (LOL) is an organization, founded by school librarian, Trudy Marshall, that builds school libraries in Uganda. During the fall months, the organization collects books, prepares them for checkout with pockets and cards, and ships them to Uganda. A team of volunteers then travels to Uganda in the summer, where it takes an empty room in a school and builds bookshelves, arranges thousands of books in library order, and teaches teachers and students how to use the library. The partnership continues for a lifetime. LOL Board members (with volunteers) revisit all previous schools each summer, restocking libraries as needed with books and supplies and providing training for LOL librarians.

How many libraries has Libraries of Love built? As of the summer 2011 projects, LOL has built 23 libraries serving over 31,000 students.

Besides donating books, is there anything more I can do to help? Shipping the books to Uganda is very costly. AAABSE is also taking monetary donations to help cover some of the costs. Monetary donations, if any, will be collected in conjunction with the books.

Where can I find more information about Libraries of Love? You can visit their website at www.librariesoflove.org.

Thank you in advance for your support and partnership!

Best regards,

Dominique Washington
AAABSE President
